Lys came to prominence as a dynamic and challenging figurative painter in the early 1980s when she had a major exhibition at the Third Eye Gallery in Glasgow (now the CCA).  This pre-empted the emergence of the Glasgow Boys.

In 1985 she was awarded a major scholarship from the Scottish Arts Council which afforded her the time and opportunity to work in Berlin.  Since that time she has had a continuing dialogue with that extraordinary city.  The themes of war reconstruction and forgiveness inform much of her paintings and drawings.
